E-gold was an online payment system and digital currency operated by Gold & Silver Reserve Inc. It allowed users to make online payments to other e-gold account holders in exchange for gold or other precious metals held in reserve. It was founded in 1996, but shut down by the U.S. government in 2009 due to legal issues.
