Alacritty is incredibly fast and the hardware acceleration makes a noticeable difference in smoothness and battery life on my laptop. However, the configuration requires editing a YAML file manually, which felt clunky compared to GUI-based terminals. It's also missing some convenience features like tabs out of the box, forcing me to rely on my window manager.
Alacritty is one of the fastest and most reliable terminal emulators out there. Written in Rust, it delivers excellent performance, with smooth rendering, low latency, and GPU acceleration that genuinely makes a differenceβespecially if you're running a lot of command-line tools or full-screen terminal apps like htop, neovim, or tmux.
It embraces a minimalist, Unix-like philosophy: do one thing and do it well. Thereβs no tab support or GUI bells and whistlesβjust a clean, focused terminal that pairs beautifully with tools like tmux or a tiling window manager. The YAML configuration is easy to manage, and font and color customization is straightforward.
That said, the lack of tabs and built-in shell management may be a drawback for users coming from more feature-rich terminals like Terminator or Kitty. But for developers who value speed, simplicity, and composability, Alacritty is a top-tier choice.
If you want a terminal that gets out of your way and just performs, Alacritty is hard to beat.
