Amie Street

Amie Street was a music store and social recommendation website where songs could be downloaded for free or for cheap. It pioneered the model of having artists and users set their own prices.

What is Amie Street?

Amie Street was an online music store and social recommendation website that was founded in 2006 and active until 2010. The key features that set Amie Street apart from other music services at the time were:

  • Songs could be downloaded for free or for very cheap prices, sometimes as low as $0.05 per track. Prices would go up as a song became more popular.
  • Artists and users could set their own prices for songs. Artists could upload their songs for free and set a minimum price, then let fans pay what they wanted to support the artist.
  • There was an emphasis on social recommendations. Users could see what their friends were listening to and get recommendations based on their tastes.

In its prime, Amie Street offered millions of tracks from over 100,000 artists. It fostered underground and independent musicians by giving them a platform to share music in new ways. However, the site ultimately shut down in 2010 after being acquired by Amazon.
