Explore, combat, and clean viruses from systems in this retro-style pixel graphics action role-playing game
Anodyne is an indie 2D top-down action role-playing video game developed by Analgesic Productions and originally released in 2013. It features a retro pixel art style and soundtrack reminiscent of classic 2D games from the 16-bit era.
In Anodyne, the player takes on the role of Young, a nano-cleaner sent into the dream world of Sean to scan for viruses and glitches that are affecting his mind. The gameplay focuses on exploring varied dream-like environments and dungeons while battling enemies in real-time combat using tools and weapons that Young can discover and upgrade.
Key features of Anodyne include its surreal, psychadelic visuals and environments, flexible character upgrading system, simple but fluid combat, and an intriguing story told through the environments rather than cutscenes or dialogue. It also features an original soundtrack by singer-songwriter Sean Han-Tani.
Anodyne was positively received upon its release for effectively evoking a nostalgic feeling for 16-bit era games while still providing new gameplay ideas and elements. It has since been re-released on multiple platforms and followed up by a sequel, Anodyne 2: Return to Dust, in 2019.
