What is Axmud?

Axmud is a text-based multiplayer online roleplaying game and mud client developed in the late 1990s. It connects players to fantasy-themed muds where they can go on adventures, fight monsters, complete quests, join guilds, and interact with other players in real-time through text commands.

When you first start Axmud, you create a customized character with details like race, class, physical attributes, and backstory. Races include humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, and more while classes range from fighters and mages to rangers, paladins, thieves, and monks. You assign attribute points to stats like strength, intelligence, wisdom, dexterity, constitution, and charisma to match your class and playstyle.

After creating a character, you pick from over 100 different MUD worlds powered by engines like DikuMUD, Merc, SMAUG, and MudOS. Each MUD has its own fantasy theme like medieval, vampire, steampunk, sci-fi, and so on. You explore locations, battle AI-controlled monsters, gather loot, and complete quests to gain experience points and power up your abilities. Or join player-run guilds and alliances to take on bigger challenges.

Since Axmud is text-based, all actions and communication happen through typing text commands. The multiplayer aspect comes from interacting with other players also adventuring in the same MUD worlds. You see their character names, chat with them in real-time, form parties to battle monsters, trade items, and more.
