A fan-made remake of the original Half-Life video game, Black Mesa updates classic graphics, sounds, and gameplay with modern Source engine technology.
Black Mesa is a fan-made remake and redesigned version of the critically acclaimed and highly influential first-person shooter video game Half-Life, originally released in 1998. Developed over the course of 8 years by Crowbar Collective, Black Mesa completely revamps the original title's graphics, audio, gameplay, and more using the advanced Source game engine.
Staying faithful to the original Half-Life's core design and vision, players once again take on the role of scientist Gordon Freeman at the mysterious Black Mesa Research Facility. After an experiment goes horribly wrong, the facility comes under invasion from aliens from another dimension. Players must guide Gordon through the ensuing chaos and help him survive the calamity as he fights his way to the surface. Along the way, Gordon comes across familiar characters like scientists Eli Vance and Isaac Kleiner and security guard Barney Calhoun.
Some of the key features Black Mesa provides over the original Half-Life include vastly improved visuals with updated higher polygon models, more realistic physics and effects, enlarged and enhanced environments taking advantage of the Source engine capabilities, refined gunplay and controls for modern standards, additional difficulty modes for hardcore players, achievement support, and expanded Xen alien dimension sections making up the climax of the game with new areas to explore.
