What is CashAddress?
CashAddress is a new address format for Bitcoin Cash (BCH) introduced in January 2018. It was developed through a collaborative effort among several BCH wallet providers and implementations. The goal of CashAddress was to create an address format that was:
- Easier to read and type for humans
- More compact and efficient to encode in QR codes
- Interoperable between different BCH software and interfaces
- Includes error detection to prevent mistaken transactions
Technically, CashAddress uses a new format dubbed 'bcash:' (with a prefix and separator) and works by converting legacy Bitcoin Cash addresses into a numeric representation, adding a prefix, and converting them to a custom alphanumeric Base32 format. An important aspect of CashAddress is that addresses are case insensitive.
Overall, the CashAddress format provides significant usability, efficiency, and safety improvements over the older Bitcoin Cash 'bitcoincash:' addresses. As it has been widely adopted, CashAddress format is considered the standard for Bitcoin Cash.
