What is Cuphead?

Cuphead is a run and gun video game developed and published by StudioMDHR. First released in 2017, Cuphead became an indie hit and critical darling thanks to its gorgeous hand-drawn visual style inspired by cartoons from the 1930s such as Steamboat Willie and classic boss rush gameplay.

In Cuphead, players control either Cuphead, a character with a large cup for a head, or his brother Mugman across a series of levels themed around the Inkwell Isles. Gameplay involves shooting, running, jumping, parrying enemy attacks, and fighting menacing bosses in fast-paced battles. The game is presented in a classic side-scrolling perspective.

The story follows the two protagonist brothers who lose a bet with the Devil at his casino and have to fight various enemies to repay their debt. As players progress through levels earning soul contracts from bosses, they travel across the strange Inkwell Isles environment meeting colorful characters and fighting eccentric giant bosses with ominous designs and unusual attacks.

Cuphead became an indie hit due to the sheer craft, detail and vintage Disney charm poured into its visual presentation and audio. Every background and character was hand-drawn and painted in a classic Fleischer Studios style leading to gorgeous animations. Combined with catchy jazz music and intense boss fights, Cuphead delivered a uniquely challenging and cinematic gameplay experience upon release.
