What is Darkwallet?
Darkwallet is an open source bitcoin wallet project focused on user privacy and anonymity. The goal of Darkwallet is to incorporate features like stealth addresses, CoinJoin, and decentralized bitcoin DNS to make bitcoin transactions extremely difficult to trace.
Some key features of Darkwallet include:
- Decentralized and serverless architecture - Darkwallet does not rely on any central servers and connects peer-to-peer to the bitcoin network
- Stealth addresses - These are one-time bitcoin addresses created for each transaction to increase anonymity
- CoinJoin implementation - Darkwallet bundles multiple payments together to obfuscate the source of funds
- Built-in bitcoin mixer - The wallet can mix coins with its own reserves to prevent tracking of payments
- Hierarchical deterministic wallet - Keys are derived from a seed in a tree structure to avoid address reuse
The Darkwallet project has currently been discontinued, but many of its pioneering privacy concepts have been incorporated into later wallets like Wasabi and Samourai. Though Darkwallet never achieved mainstream adoption, it set the stage for bitcoin privacy best practices.
