A free and open source tabletop roleplaying game system, Dart RPG offers flexibility and customization, supporting multiple genres and play styles with its dice pool mechanic.
Dart RPG is an open source, rules-light tabletop roleplaying game released under the OGL. It was designed from the ground up to provide game masters and players with a flexible system that can be adapted to many genres and styles of play.
At its core, Dart RPG uses a dice pool mechanic. Whenever a character attempts an action with a chance of failure, the player rolls a number of six-sided dice equal to their skill ranking in the relevant attribute or ability score. Each die that rolls a 4, 5, or 6 is considered a success. The game master assigns a difficulty, and if the number of successes meets or exceeds it, the action succeeds.
Character creation in Dart RPG allows players to build highly customizable characters. There are no hardcoded classes or archetypes - instead, attributes, skills, talents, flaws, and other components are mix-and-matched. This freeform system enables concepts from hard sci-fi space marines to epic fantasy heroes to gritty noir private eyes and more.
The core rules provide everything needed to play, but the system was designed to encourage homebrew content and customization both in mechanics and in flavor. The end result is an RPG that puts narrative, flexibility, and choice at the forefront.
