Dead Island is an action role-playing survival horror video game series developed by Polish developer Techland and originally published in 2011 by German company Deep Silver for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. It takes place on the fictional zombie-infested resort island of Banoi and features a combination of first-person shooter and melee combat mechanics.
The first game in the series, also titled Dead Island, focuses on 4 playable survivors trying to survive and escape the island after a mysterious zombie outbreak happens at the island resort they are staying at. Players can utilize a variety of melee and ranged weapons as well as the environment itself as they fight through hordes of zombies across diverse locations like tropical beaches, towns, rainforests and more.
The series features a unique skill and leveling system that allows players to customize and upgrade their combat abilities across several skill trees. There is also a focus on melee combat and weapon crafting, allowing the player to make customized weapons from scattered items and tools. The game can be played solo or in 4-player cooperative multiplayer.
A sequel titled Dead Island: Riptide was released in 2013, continuing the story with the original 4 survivors. A new spin-off game called Escape Dead Island released in 2014 takes place in a different narrative timeline unrelated to the first 2 games. The franchise remains popular for its zombie-slaying action and RPG elements.
