Dissenter: Web Browser Extension and App for Commenting

Discover Dissenter, a web browser extension and app by Gab.com, allowing users to post comments and discuss content on any website without relying on the underlying site's comment section.

What is Dissenter?

Dissenter is a web browser extension and mobile app created in 2019 by Gab.com, a social networking service known for its far-right userbase. It allows users to comment on any website they visit through an overlay, bypassing the native comment sections of websites.

The main idea behind Dissenter is to facilitate discussion and commentary without relying on websites to provide the infrastructure. Users can leave comments, upvote comments left by others, and reply in threaded conversations. The comments exist in an overlay that floats over the website content thanks to the browser extension.

Controversially, this means users can comment on websites that either don't have comment sections or whose owners/moderators removed comments. Supporters see Dissenter as upholding free speech principles and decentralizing online discussions. Critics argue it facilitates harassment campaigns and violates website owners' rights to control conversations on their platforms.

In 2021, Google and Mozilla banned the Dissenter browser extension from their browser extension stores citing violations of their harassment and hate speech policies after documenting numerous abusive comments left on websites. Nevertheless, Gab.com continues to offer Dissenter as an app and extension through its own channels, claiming over 265,000 users.
