Dual N Back: Brain Training Game

Dual N Back is a brain training game that challenges working memory and fluid intelligence. The goal is to remember the location and audio cue from n steps earlier while new cues are presented.

What is Dual N Back?

Dual N Back is a brain training computer game designed to improve working memory and fluid intelligence through an intensive, dual modal task. The gameplay involves remembering the location of squares highlighted on a 3x3 grid, as well as remembering letters or sounds played, from a specified number of turns earlier.

As the game progresses, the number of turns to remember back (known as N) increases, making the game more difficult. The player must simultaneously track the square locations and audio cues from N steps earlier while new cues are being presented. This taxes the working memory system intensely.

Studies have found benefits from practicing Dual N Back for improving performance on tests of fluid intelligence, suggesting the gameplay helps strengthen the neural connections responsible for memory, focus, and reasoning abilities. However, the transfer to real-world tasks is still being investigated.

Dual N Back provides adjustable difficulty levels to remain challenging for the player. It has a simple, no-frills interface focused entirely on the cognitive training. Some versions provide statistics tracking to show mental performance improvements over time. It is available on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android platforms.
