What is Dump Truck?

A dump truck, also known as a tipper truck, is a heavy commercial vehicle used for transporting loose materials such as dirt, gravel, or demolition waste to and from construction sites, quarries, etc. It has an open-box bed on the back which can be lifted up by hydraulic rams to dump out the contents.

Dump trucks come in a variety of sizes, small ones having around a 10 metric ton capacity while large mining trucks can handle over 400 metric tons. The bed which holds the material is typically made with reinforced steel and can tilt back at an angle of 45 degrees or more by the hydraulic pistons. This enables the contents to easily slide out the back when it needs to be emptied.

These versatile trucks are an indispensable tool on most construction projects. They efficiently transport and dispose of excavated dirt, rocks, concrete, bricks from the demolition site which needs to be moved to prepare the land. They also bring in and spread materials like gravel or fill dirt needed to lay foundations. The trucks can easily travel over rough terrain on construction sites.

The key components of a dump truck are a diesel engine and transmission to propel it, heavy-duty axles to withstand loaded weight, the hoist mechanism to raise and lower the dump body, and the dump body itself. Manual or hydraulic controlled models are available smaller capacities while the highest capacity mining trucks use electric drive systems.
