What is EXAPUNKS?

EXAPUNKS is an indie puzzle/programming game released in 2018 by developer Zachtronics. In the game, you play the role of a hacker in 1997 who has contracted a deadly phage virus. You hack into various computer systems by writing programs in the fictional EXAPUNKS assembly language to control robotic helpers called EXAs (Extensible Algol Computers).

Through more than 60 levels, your objective is to break into networks, crack security protocols, steal data, and more - all to fund the effort to find a cure for your disease. The puzzles become increasingly complex as you manipulate multiple EXAs at once within the simulated operating systems. You have to think carefully about data manipulation, protocols, network packets, and other details to solve them.

EXAPUNKS has received praise for presenting programming concepts in an accessible, gamified format. The puzzles offer a fun and engaging way to learn basics of coding, algorithms, debugging, and other core programming skills.
