FreeArc's compression ratios, especially with its own FAR format, are genuinely impressive and often beat more popular tools. However, the interface feels dated and clunky compared to modern alternatives like 7-Zip or WinRAR, and some of the advanced settings can be intimidating for casual users. It's a fantastic, free tool for compression enthusiasts who need maximum savings, but its usability holds it back from being a daily driver for most people.

I was excited to try FreeArc for its high compression claims and open-source nature, but the experience has been frustrating. While it can create archives quickly, I've had multiple instances where it failed to extract archives it created, even its own FAR format, making the data unrecoverable. The interface feels dated and clunky, and the error messages are cryptic and unhelpful. For a tool meant to secure my data, this level of unreliability is unacceptable.

FreeArc has become my go-to archiver for everyday backups and compressing large project folders. It's impressively fast, and the compression ratio with its own FAR format is noticeably better than standard ZIP files for my mixed data. The interface is straightforward, and I appreciate the wide format support, which saves me from needing multiple tools.

FreeArc's compression ratios, especially with its FAR format, are genuinely impressive and can outperform 7-Zip on certain file types. However, the interface feels clunky and outdated compared to modern alternatives, and the development seems to have stalled years ago. It's a great tool for squeezing out every last byte if you're patient, but for general use, it's hard to recommend over more active projects.
