Side-scrolling platform game originally released by Capcom in 1988, featuring a knight battling undead and demons to rescue Princess Prin Prin with extremely high difficulty level
Ghouls'n Ghosts is a side-scrolling platform game developed and published by Capcom. First released as an arcade game in 1988, it was later ported to several home consoles and computers including the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, Amiga, and Commodore 64.
In Ghouls'n Ghosts, the player controls the knight Arthur in his quest to rescue Princess Prin Prin from the demon king Loki. Arthur must battle through six stages infested with undead, ghouls, demons, and other monsters. Along the way, he can pick up a variety of weapons and armor upgrades to help fight off enemies.
The game is noted for its very high difficulty level. Arthur dies after just two hits, and checkpoints are sparse. Enemies attack in large numbers and relentless patterns. Precise timing and memorization of enemy placement is required to make progress. As a result, the game can be extremely challenging for all but the most dedicated players.
Ghouls'n Ghosts stands as one of Capcom's most iconic arcade titles from the late 80s era. Its extreme challenge, Gothic fantasy setting, and soundtrack by Tamayo Kawamoto made it popular in its day. It remains a classic example of unrelenting gameplay design that pushes players to overcome incredible odds.
