A series of turn-based games focusing on colonial era exploration, conquest, and colonization by European powers, developed by Frog City Software and published by Strategic Simulations.
The Imperialism video game series is a set of turn-based grand strategy games developed by the now defunct Frog City Software and originally published by Strategic Simulations in the late 1990s. There have been two main games in the series: Imperialism in 1997 and Imperialism II: The Age of Exploration in 1999.
The games are set in the colonial era between the 15th and 19th centuries and allow players to take control of various competing European colonial powers. The objective is to explore the world, establish profitable international trade routes, conquer territory, exploit natural resources in colonies, and compete with other powers to become the dominant global colonial empire.
Gameplay involves managing exploration ships, establishing colonies, developing production and resources, conducting trade, maneuvering military units in strategic conquests, managing diplomatic relations and pencil-and-paper styled economic micromanagement. Attention is placed on attempting to maintain stability and productivity in your colonies.
The Imperialism series stands out for its deep strategic empire building and economic gameplay merged with a strong focus on the political, economic and social aspects of colonization – for example, the concept of social classes plays a prominent role. The games received positive reviews, but the series was discontinued after the second installment.
