A legendary game series combining role-playing and resource management, first released in 1990, known for its engaging exploration, army building, and strategic combat.
King's Bounty is a long-running fantasy video game series that pioneered the turn-based strategy genre. The first game was developed by New World Computing and released in 1990 for MS-DOS. It quickly gained a cult following for its unique fusion of strategic resource management, army building, and exploration elements within an immersive, medieval fantasy setting.
In King's Bounty, the player assumes the role of a knight tasked with retrieving the Sceptre of Order from the forces of chaos. Gameplay revolves around amassing an army, exploring the fantasy landscape, and engaging in strategic, turn-based battles. Between battles, players can recruit new creatures to their army, purchase equipment, and manage resources.
One of the series' defining features is the great diversity of recruitable creature troops, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and special abilities. Army composition and tactical positioning play a big role in the strategic combat. The games also contain role-playing elements, as the player character gains experience and levels up over the course of their quest.
After the initial trilogy of King's Bounty games throughout the 1990s, the series went on hiatus for many years. It was revived in 2008 with King's Bounty: The Legend, which launched a popular modern reboot developed by Katauri Interactive. Several well-received sequels and spin-offs have followed since, bringing the compelling gameplay and style of the classic King's Bounty titles into the contemporary era of gaming.
