Discover a massively multiplayer online game where you can build, explore and adventure in a world made of iconic LEGO bricks.
Lego Universe was a massively multiplayer online game developed by NetDevil in partnership with the Lego Group. It launched in October 2010 after lengthy development and allowing players to take part in early access and testing phases. The game allowed players to explore worlds made entirely of Lego bricks while defeating enemies, going on quests, and unlocking new gear.
Players could customize unique mini-figures as their characters and join one of several factions with different backstories and special abilities. They could also build structures out of virtual Lego bricks and interact with others in social spaces. The game featured various themed worlds such as the Nexus Tower, Crux Prime, Nimbus Station, and many more for players to explore.
Despite initially positive reception and appeal among fans of Lego games, the development and operating costs proved to be too high over time. Lego Universe shut down in January 2012, having failed to attract enough subscribers to sustain itself. At its peak, the game had just over 1 million registered players but only a fraction of that were active monthly subscribers.
While discontinued as an online game, Lego Universe left a legacy for innovative use of Lego branding in an MMO format. Its emphasis on creative building and multiplayer bonding around Lego play predated things such as cross-platform support and user-generated content that later became more commonplace in gaming.
