Free online textbooks and educational resources for science, math, engineering, humanities, and social sciences.
LibreTexts is a non-profit organization that develops and hosts online textbooks and other educational materials which are freely available and customizable under a Creative Commons license. Started in 2012 by chemistry professor Delmar Larsen at the University of California, Davis, LibreTexts aims to provide free, high-quality course materials that drive down the cost of education.
The LibreTexts platform allows instructors to compose textbooks, curricula, and other learning materials from content authored by LibreTexts as well as imported Open Educational Resources (OER). This content can be combined, modified, and adapted for specific courses or institutions. LibreTexts also allows students to access the learning materials for free online.
The project has expanded from an initial focus on chemistry textbooks to encompass materials for a wide variety of subjects including physics, biology, mathematics, engineering, social sciences, and humanities. As of 2022, the platform hosts over 58,000 textbook pages and receives over 30 million pageviews per month. It has over 4,500 registered contributors working to create, assemble, and review materials.
LibreTexts is designed to lower financial, accessibility, and flexibility barriers in education. By providing high-quality, customizable course materials for free online, the project aims to make education more affordable and accessible while also giving instructors greater flexibility over their curricula.
