Microsoft Copilot is an AI assistant from Microsoft that provides suggestions for code completion and even generates entire code blocks and functions inside development environments like Visual Studio Code. It uses advanced machine learning models that have been trained on a huge corpus of publicly available source code from GitHub in order to provide relevant and logically sound code suggestions.

Copilot can suggest method names, parameter types, entire lines or blocks of code based on the code context and comments written by the developer. For example, if you start typing a code comment to parse a CSV file, Copilot may suggest relevant code for reading the file, splitting rows and accessing values. It works with many programming languages including Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Ruby and more.

The tool is designed to boost developer productivity by reducing time spent on rote coding tasks. It can act as an AI pair programmer and make coding more accessible to those new to software development. Copilot is available as a Visual Studio Code extension and is currently in technical preview from Microsoft.
