NTFS-3G
NTFS-3G: Cross-platform NTFS File System Reader/Writer for Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD
An open source NTFS implementation providing read and write access to NTFS drives on non-Windows operating systems.
What is NTFS-3G?
NTFS-3G is an open source cross-platform implementation of the Microsoft Windows NTFS file system. It provides full read and write access to NTFS partitions from non-Windows operating systems like Linux, Mac OS X, and FreeBSD.
Without NTFS-3G, these operating systems can only read NTFS drives, not write to them. NTFS-3G uses the FUSE (Filesystem in Userspace) interface to provide complete NTFS functionality at the kernel level. This allows non-Windows OSes to transparently handle NTFS drives like any other disk.
Some key capabilities provided by NTFS-3G include:
- Read and write access to existing NTFS partitions from Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, and more
- Support for journaling and advanced NTFS features like alternate data streams and encryption
- High performance and stability comparable to Windows' native NTFS driver
- Open source codebase with contributions from developers across many operating systems
- Advanced disk management like reformatting, resizing partitions, and repairing NTFS drives
- Backwards compatibility with older NTFS versions used by Windows NT 3.1 through Windows 10
In summary, NTFS-3G delivers full NTFS support so that non-Windows computers can seamlessly manage and use NTFS drives for sharing files and data.
