Open Library: Open, Editable Library Catalogs

Access to public domain and out-of-print books, building a web page for every book ever published

What is Open Library?

Open Library is an online project aimed at creating a web page for every book ever published. It is developed and maintained by the non-profit Internet Archive.

Some key features and information about Open Library:

  • It catalogs over 30 million books, providing bibliographic data like title, author, publication date etc. Many book records link to downloadable digital copies hosted at archive.org or external sites.
  • The catalog is editable - anyone can contribute information and improve book records. The aim is to involve the community in building towards the ambitious goal of cataloging every published book.
  • It provides access to many public domain books which can be borrowed and read online. There are also links to borrow out-of-print books from lending libraries.
  • The site offers user accounts with options to contribute reviews, create personal virtual bookshelves, track reading history and share profiles publicly.
  • Software and data is open source. Catalog records are published under ODC-By license allowing reuse.
  • While not as extensive as some library catalogs, its strength lies in linking to digital versions to borrow or download copies when available.
