What is Planning Poker?
Planning Poker is a consensus-based technique for estimating in agile software development. It is used by agile teams to estimate user stories or tasks in story points or ideal hours rather than using absolute time estimates.
Here's how it works:
The product owner or team lead describes a user story or task to the estimators on the team.
Each estimator is given a deck of planning poker cards with numeric values like 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 20, 40, 100. The values represent story points or ideal hours.
Without discussing estimates with each other, each estimator selects a card that represents their estimate for the item.
All cards are then revealed and the estimators discuss their estimates, especially any significant differences in estimates. The high and low estimators explain their reasoning.
After discussion, each estimator re-estimates by selecting a new card. This continues until the team reaches consensus on the estimate.
The agreed estimate is recorded and the next item is estimated.
The benefit of Planning Poker is that it brings together multiple perspectives to arrive at an estimate through consensus and discussion rather than just averaging estimates. This helps produce more accurate estimates.
