Play4Free was a free-to-play online multiplayer first person shooter game developed and published by K2 Network. Originally released in 2010, it was inspired heavily by Valve's popular Counter-Strike franchise and was designed to provide a free alternative to play classic Counter-Strike gameplay.
The game featured many of the classic Counter-Strike maps such as Dust, Dust2, Italy and Aztec and also had classic Counter-Strike weapons like the AWP, AK-47 and M4A1 with additional microtransaction weapons available as well. Gameplay involved fast-paced, skill-based gun fights between terrorists and counter-terrorists in objective-based modes like bomb defusal and hostage rescue.
While the core gameplay was free, K2 Network monetized the game through the sale of premium weapons, weapon skins and character skins & cosmetics via microtransactions. This allowed players to customize the look of their weapons and avatar.
At its peak, Play4Free had over 16 million registered users. However, due to declining numbers, K2 Network announced in 2012 that the game's servers would be shut down in 2014. The game ultimately went offline in April 2014, ending its four year run.
