PokéGo is a mobile game that uses augmented reality and location tracking to allow players to find, capture, battle and train virtual Pokémon characters that appear on device screens as if in the real world. The game is free-to-play with in-app purchases.
PokéGo is an augmented reality mobile game developed and published by Niantic for iOS and Android devices. Inspired by Nintendo's Pokémon franchise, the game uses real location tracking and mapping technologies to create the experience of hunting Pokémon in the real world.
Players walk around neighborhoods, cities and towns to locate Pokémon characters that appear on their device's screen as if actually present at that location. The game uses the device's GPS and clock functions to know the player's location and time of day, which impacts what Pokémon species appear. Players can search PokéStops found at real world locations like monuments and public artwork to acquire Poké Balls for capturing Pokémon as well as other in-game items.
After capturing Pokémon, players can use their collection to battle other players at Gym locations also found in the real world. As players gain experience and capture more Pokémon, they “level up” and can access more powerful items. The game also has social components for forming teams, cooperating with other players and competing for ownership and prestige at Gyms.
PokéGo pioneered real world mobile augmented reality gaming along with the concept of an MMO roleplaying game overlaid onto real geography. While the game is free-to-download, it encourages repeated play through expandable character rosters acquired randomly, the ability to power up characters with stardust and candy, along with purchasable items like Bag upgrades, Lure modules to attract Pokémon and Lucky Eggs for double experience points.
