ScummVM: Play classic graphical point-and-click adventure games

An open-source interpreter allowing you to play classic adventure games on modern computers and operating systems, replacing original engines for a new experience.

What is ScummVM?

ScummVM is an open-source interpreter program that allows you to play classic point-and-click graphical adventure games on modern operating systems. Originally, these games were designed to run on older systems like Apple Macintosh computers, Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, and more - systems that are obsolete today.

What ScummVM does is replace the original game engines used to run these classic titles with a custom engine that emulates the originals. This allows the games not only to work on modern Windows, Linux, and macOS machines, but also opens up the possibility of playing on alternative platforms like game consoles, smartphones and tablets, and more.

Some examples of classic adventure game series that ScummVM supports include Monkey Island, Broken Sword, Discworld, Simon the Sorcerer, Beneath a Steel Sky, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Gobliiins, and many more. Games powered by the SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) engine are currently the main focus, but other engines like AGI and Adventure Game Studio are also usable with ScummVM.

As an open-source project, ScummVM is worked on by a community of developers and is completely free to use and share. It originated around 2001 when the idea emerged to reverse-engineer and replace the executable code in classic games so they could run on modern software and hardware. Almost 20 years later, ScummVM has matured into a versatile tool that helps preserve classic video games so new generations can continue enjoying these timeless adventures.
