Discover Shadow Complex, a 2.5D action-adventure platform game developed by Chair Entertainment and Epic Games, released for Xbox 360 through Xbox Live Arcade in 2009.
Shadow Complex is a 2009 action-adventure platform video game developed by Chair Entertainment in association with Epic Games (using its Unreal Engine 3) and published by Microsoft Game Studios for the Xbox 360 through Xbox Live Arcade.
The game follows Jason Flemming and his girlfriend Claire, who trespass into a remote cavern while exploring near Weston, Washington. When she is kidnapped by a paramilitary group called the Progressive Restoration, Jason must rescue her while attempting to discover the group's motives as he sneaks through their base. In the process, Jason acquires various weapons and tools to advance.
Shadow Complexs gameplay is presented in a 2.5D format; the player character moves in a 2D plane, but the environment is rendered in 3D. It combines exploration and combat from a side-scrolling perspective with more recent gameplay elements found in the Metroidvania genre such as gaining access to areas through items or abilities gained during the game. These include a number of weapon upgrades allowing the player to progress by fighting through enemies and bosses while attempting to uncover the underlying conspiracy.
Upon release, Shadow Complex received highly positive reviews, with critics praising the gameplay, visuals and use of the Metroidvania structure. It also became one of the highest selling and most critically acclaimed downloadable titles on Xbox Live Arcade, and has been frequently listed among the greatest video games of its generation.
