What is The End Is Nigh?

The End Is Nigh is a 2D indie platform video game developed by Edmund McMillen and originally released in 2017. The player controls a character named Ash, a sentient blob-like being created in a lab. Ash navigates through a series of challenging levels filled with hazards, enemies, and obstacles.

The visuals are deliberately minimalist, with a black and white color scheme reminiscent of early video games. The tight platforming controls and unforgiving difficulty also pay homage to games from the 80s and 90s eras. Levels feature spikes, saw blades, lethal drops, and other hazards that will instantly kill Ash.

The game's story and themes touch on darkly comedic ideas about the morbidity, pointlessness, and absurdity of existence. Ash is presented as the last "thing" alive, traversing the ruins of civilization after some unknown apocalypse, collecting trinkets from humanity's remains.

The End Is Nigh contains over 600 levels across 12 chapters plus extra unlockable challenge levels. There is no way to die, but Ash will smash apart upon impact, requiring levels to be restarted.
