What is Winee?

Winee is an open-source compatibility layer software application that aims to allow computer programs developed for Microsoft Windows to run on Unix-like operating systems. It provides compatibility at the binary level, allowing users on platforms such as Linux, macOS, BSD, and Solaris to install and run many Windows applications and games without having a license for Microsoft Windows.

Winee works by implementing Windows API calls into native system calls of the host operating system. It contains a program loader that loads and executes PE executables, as well as a DLL loader capable of loading Windows DLLs. The compatibility layers translate calls to the Windows API into POSIX calls that the native operating system can understand, providing a near-seamless experience to the user.
