At its peak popularity in the early and mid-2000s, WinMX had over 10 million monthly users. It used innovative distributed search technology that allowed users to easily find shared media files on the network without a central index. This made the network highly resilient against shutdowns.

However, WinMX has also faced controversy over copyright infringement due to some users sharing copyrighted content without permission. The recording industry sued WinMX in the mid-2000s which forced updates to filter out copyrighted content. It also now limits file transfer speeds.

Today, WinMX is still used by a smaller number of users who want to share content. It provides an open platform that gives users more control over their file sharing activities compared to closed systems. However, it lacks some modern features and conveniences of services like Spotify or Apple Music for media streaming.
