What is Wipeout (Series)?
Wipeout is an American game show series in which contestants compete in a series of athletic obstacle course challenges across a large water-based obstacle course. The series originally aired on ABC from 2008 to 2014.
In each episode, 24 contestants competed in a series of three rounds - a qualifying round, a round of various skill competitions, and the final Wipeout Zone obstacle course. The courses were elaborate and often featured large water hazards and areas where contestants could easily fall into the water. Many obstacles had humorous names like the "Sweeper" or the "Dreadmills".
The show was known for its use of humor, with commentators giving funny remarks about contestants' performances. Seeing average people struggle and fall while running the over-the-top obstacle courses provided much of the entertainment value. Each season featured a variety of theme episodes as well.
Wipeout drew comparisons to the Japanese game show Most Extreme Elimination Challenge and to shows like American Gladiators. It was a popular primetime series for ABC during its initial run. The premise allowed it to appeal to viewers interested in sports entertainment and physical competition shows.
