Yahoo! Pipes
Yahoo! Pipes: Visual Programming Tool
A visual programming tool for building data mashups and workflows, allowing users to aggregate, manipulate, and remix content from around the web without needing to code.
What is Yahoo! Pipes?
Yahoo! Pipes is a visual programming tool that was launched by Yahoo in 2007 to enable users to aggregate, manipulate and remix data from around the web without needing to write code. It provides a drag-and-drop GUI interface for connecting different data sources and applying filters, parsers, unions and other modules to create data mashups and workflows known as Pipes.
Some key capabilities and features of Yahoo! Pipes include:
- Fetching data feeds from various sources including websites, APIs, RSS/Atom feeds etc.
- Filtering, slicing, sorting, merging, transforming and otherwise manipulating data flows
- Outputting remixed data flows as RSS, JSON, KML or other formats
- Embedding Pipes data mashups into webpages and apps using iframes or JavaScript
- A library of built-in modules plus a module developer framework to extend functionality
- A large public repository of reusable Pipes created by the community
While Yahoo! Pipes was very popular among developers and early data mashup enthusiasts for several years, it was eventually discontinued by Yahoo in 2015 as they moved away from supporting developer products and services. However, many of the key concepts pioneered by Yahoo! Pipes live on today in various no-code data integration, ETL and workflow tools.
