What is Zoo Tycoon (Series)?

Zoo Tycoon is a popular business simulation video game series where players design, build, and manage a wildlife zoo. The original Zoo Tycoon game was released in 2001 for Windows and developed by Blue Fang Games. The player takes on the role of a zoo director, responsible for the construction and maintenance of enclosures and facilities, animal acquisition and care, hiring personnel, managing the budget, and keeping visitors and animals happy.

The Zoo Tycoon series puts emphasis on realistic management and animal behavior modeling. As zoo director, the player must provide suitable habitats, enrichment, and proper diets for a diverse range of species. Well-designed zoos allow animals to thrive, leading to healthier, happier animals that in turn attract more visitors and donations. Players can choose from over 500 animal species in the expansive campaign mode or customizable freeform maps and scenarios.

The series includes the original Zoo Tycoon (2001) and its expansions, Zoo Tycoon 2 (2004) and its many expansion packs and downloadable content, and Zoo Tycoon (2013) which was a remake for Xbox and focused specifically on zoo exhibit design. The games have sold over 12 million copies collectively, showing the popularity and longevity of the Zoo Tycoon franchise.
