Free, open-source roguelike RPG with a deep dungeon, randomized items and encounters, and the goal of defeating Morgoth to win the game.
Angband is a popular roguelike RPG first released in 1990. It is free, open-source software developed by a community of volunteers.
The premise of Angband is that you play as an adventurer delving deep into a 100-level dungeon named Angband, defeatedly seeking to find and defeat the dark lord Morgoth to win the game. Along the way you will encounter many randomized monsters and find randomized treasures and equipment.
Gameplay consists of tactically moving through dungeon levels, fighting monsters using melee combat or magic, gaining experience levels, learning new skills, finding better equipment, managing inventory, and ultimately braving deeper into the dungeon. Deeper levels become progressively more challenging.
Being a roguelike, death is permanent in Angband. However, the randomized levels, items, and encounters provide nearly endless replayability. The game has very basic ASCII graphics and gameplay is largely text-based, relying on the player's imagination.
Angband helped define and popularize the roguelike genre. Its endless dungeon crawl format inspired many later games across multiple genres. The open source community continues developing and enhancing Angband to this day.
