What is Audiobookshelf?

Audiobookshelf is an open source, self-hosted audiobook server and web-based client application for managing and streaming personal audiobook collections. Developed in Java, it runs on Linux, Windows, and macOS platforms.

With Audiobookshelf, users can upload audiobook files in MP3 and M4B formats to the server where metadata such as title, author, chapters, cover art, and playlists gets extracted automatically. The responsive web interface lets you browse, search, sample and play audiobooks with playback position syncing across devices.

Features include:

  • Add books via upload or folder monitoring
  • Tag-based classification and sorting
  • Bookmarking for saving playback positions
  • Playback via HTML5 audio player
  • Mobile-friendly interface
  • User management for multi-user installations
  • OPDS catalog sharing and offline download
  • Audiobook format conversion
  • Automated backups

As an open source project, Audiobookshelf is customizable and extendable. It can be hosted on your own server for private audiobook streaming without any subscription fees or usage restrictions. The active development community welcomes contributions on GitHub.
