What is Auto Chess?

Auto Chess is a free-to-play strategy video game that originated as a Dota 2 custom game mode created by Chinese game developers Drodo Studio in early 2019. It kicked off an entirely new battle royale genre called auto battlers or auto chess, which has since exploded in popularity with many similar games now on the market.

In Auto Chess, eight players face off on an 8x8 checkered game board. Each player starts with a set amount of gold and builds an army by purchasing heroes, known as chess pieces, from a shared pool. There are over 50 heroes to choose from, with distinct abilities and characteristics. The heroes are divided into different races and classes which give synergies and bonuses when certain combinations are placed together.

Players take turns buying new heroes to place on their board, building up formidable armies. Once the preparation phase is over, a 5v5 autobattler commences where players sit back and watch the action unfold. No direct control is allowed as heroes automatically move, attack, cast spells and use abilities. The last player with pieces remaining wins the round, with typical games lasting up to 30 minutes.

Auto Chess relies heavily on strategic team building, counter play, and adaptation based on the current player pool. It's a game of survival as each round players gain and lose health. Managing your economy, creating powerful synergies, and modifying your strategy to defeat opponents are key to victory.

The success of Auto Chess led to the creation of Teamfight Tactics in League of Legends, Hearthstone Battlegrounds, and dedicated games like Dota Underlords. The auto battler genre exploded in popularity, with Drodo Studio eventually releasing a mobile version of Auto Chess which sees over 5 million active players each day.
