What is Bedpage?
Bedpage is a classified advertisements website launched in 2016. It is very similar to Craigslist, allowing people to post listings in various categories like jobs, housing, goods for sale, services, community groups, and more.
Like Craigslist, Bedpage does not conduct background checks or verify the users who create listings on its site. The anonymous and unregulated nature has led to many people using Bedpage to solicit illegal services such as prostitution and sex trafficking.
Law enforcement agencies have linked numerous cases of illegal activity to listings on Bedpage over the years. Human trafficking survivors have also stated that their traffickers would make them post sexual advertisements on Bedpage and similar sites.
In 2018, the U.S. Congress passed the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act and Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (SESTA-FOSTA) into law. Bedpage was one of the websites whose users frequently violated these sex trafficking laws. After the passage of SESTA-FOSTA, major payment processors and advertising partners withdrew support from Bedpage to avoid liability for its illegal content.
So in summary, Bedpage is viewed as a less ethical version of Craigslist. While its simplicity and lack of restrictions makes it popular, many people rightly criticize Bedpage for enabling illegal and dangerous activity like sex trafficking.
