What is Backpage.llc?

While Backpage.llc hosted ads for legal services, it increasingly became known as a place where one could advertise illegal services, especially related to prostitution and sex trafficking. In 2018, Backpage.llc was seized by U.S. federal authorities, including the FBI, IRS, and postal inspectors. Several of its executives were charged and pled guilty to money laundering and facilitating prostitution. The seizure and charges were the culmination of investigations that found that Backpage.llc was extensively involved in promoting illegal sex-related services.

Following the federal seizure, Backpage.llc ceased operations. The seizure was seen by many advocates as an important step in clamping down on the online promotion of sex trafficking and illegal prostitution services in the U.S.
