Bluesky

Bluesky is an open source social media platform focused on ethical algorithms, privacy, and decentralization. It aims to provide an alternative to the big commercial platforms by creating a federated network of servers to host users' data.

What is Bluesky?

Bluesky is an open-source, decentralized social media protocol and platform started by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey in 2019. It is still in active development.

The goal of Bluesky is to create an ethical, non-profit alternative to commercial social networks by building an open and decentralized standard for social media based on the Fediverse model. This allows servers to communicate across a distributed network, avoiding lock-in to a single platform.

Some key aspects and goals of Bluesky include:

  • Open protocols and data portability to give users ownership over their data
  • Moderation tools focused on user safety
  • Algorithmic transparency and feed personalization options
  • Respect for privacy and preventing illicit content according to community guidelines
  • An open technical architecture to allowAnyone can build on and extend

As it is still under development by a small team, Bluesky has yet to release a public version of its platform. But it represents an ambitious attempt to apply the latest cryptography, consensus protocols, and ethical data stewardship models to fundamentally reinvent social networking.
