What is CharityWatch?

CharityWatch, formerly known as the American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP), is an independent nonprofit organization founded in 1992. Its mission is to help donors make informed giving decisions and maximize the effectiveness of their charitable donations.

CharityWatch offers free reports on over 750 major charities that detail each charity's efficiency, capacity, need, transparency and governance practices. These in-depth reports assign letter grades to each charity to rate their financial performance and transparency so donors can easily compare different nonprofits.

In addition to charity reports, CharityWatch features articles, tips and Top 10 lists for savvy donors. It also publishes the Charity Rating Guide & Watchdog Report, which compiles financial data on roughly 600 U.S. charities and awards each one a letter grade rating.
