What is Club Penguin Island?

Club Penguin Island was a massively multiplayer online game developed and published by Disney Canada as a successor to the original Club Penguin. It was launched in 2017 for mobile devices and web browsers, featuring significantly upgraded graphics, technology, and gameplay compared to previous Club Penguin iterations.

In Club Penguin Island, players created customizable penguin avatars and explored a snow-covered virtual world. The game world consisted of multiple outdoor areas and buildings to visit, each offering various minigames, quests, secrets to uncover, and characters to meet. Parties and special events held on a regular basis decorated the world with fun themes.

A major aspect of Club Penguin Island was social interaction. Players could chat, add friends, join player card collections, form and track progress in buddy lists, throw snowballs, dance, and more with one another. There were also many opportunities for creativity, such as designing igloos, decorating the yards outside igloos, dressing up penguin avatars, and using emotes.

While largely focused on fun social gameplay for a younger demographic, Club Penguin Island also encouraged values like safety, creativity, community, and adventure. Moderators and filtering systems helped maintain child-friendly environments.

After over a year in operation, Club Penguin Island was discontinued in 2018 so that Disney could shift its focus toward a new app for the Club Penguin franchise. Many fans were disappointed to see the innovative virtual world come to an end.
