Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason is a psychological horror first-person shooter video game developed by Russian developer Action Forms and published in North America by Aspyr Media. It was released for Microsoft Windows in 2009.
The game takes place in 1981 onboard a fictional nuclear icebreaker ship called the North Wind, which gets trapped in the Arctic ice while escorting three scientists to a remote meteorological station in the Arctic Circle. The ship becomes damaged by the ice and all of its crew supposedly froze to death. The player takes on the role of meteorologist Alexander Nesterov, who is sent by the company that owns the ship to investigate what happened.
As Alexander explores the frozen wreck of the ship, he discovers hints about the ill fate that befell its crew. He also finds he has gained the ability to mentally travel back in time to key past events and relive them through the eyes of the crew members. This enables him to piece together the mystery behind the ship's current state.
Gameplay in Cryostasis emphasizes survival and exploration elements, challenging the player to manage their temperature and health as they navigate the ship's dark and frozen corridors. Combat requires the player to rely more on tactics than fast reflexes. There are also physics-based puzzles to solve that involve manipulating objects in the environment.
