What is Dirc?
dirc is a lightweight, open-source Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems. Developed in C, dirc focuses on having a small memory footprint and simple, easy-to-use interface for basic IRC chatting.
Some key features of dirc include:
- Minimal interface for joinining IRC channels, chatting with users, and managing connections
- Low memory usage - uses less than 2MB of RAM in most cases
- Supports IPv6 connections in addition to IPv4
- Scrollback buffer to view previous chat history
- Auto-reconnect feature if unexpectedly disconnected
- SSL/TLS support for connecting securely to IRC servers
As it lacks advanced IRC features like scripting or theming, dirc is best suited for those looking for a fast, lightweight client for text-based IRC chat. Its simplicity and small footprint make it a good option for older computers or low-powered devices where resources are limited.
dirc is released under the GNU General Public License. It runs on Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD and Solaris operating systems. The source code is available on GitHub.
Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord, Rocket.Chat, Mattermost, Matrix.org, Zulip, Keybase, Guilded, Ripcord, IRCCloud, Pychat are some alternatives to Dirc.
