What is Fakespot?

Fakespot is a free service that helps shoppers detect fake and unreliable reviews on sites like Amazon. It works by using artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to analyze reviews and assign letter grades indicating how trustworthy the reviews likely are.

The service is available as browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox as well as a mobile app. Once installed, Fakespot will automatically analyze the reviews when you visit an Amazon product page. It highlights any reviews it deems suspicious and provides an adjusted rating for the product excluding the questionable reviews. The analysis looks at factors like whether reviews use overly generic language, if they were written from suspicious locations, if the reviewer has a history of leaving only 5-star reviews, etc.

Fakespot has become popular among online shoppers as a tool to cut through marketing claims on sites like Amazon and get a more reliable evaluation of a product from its user reviews. While not perfect, it does seem to accurately identify many paid, incentivized, and low-quality reviews.
