High-speed racing and vehicle destruction in the demolition derby-style racing video game franchise created by Bugbear Entertainment, available on various platforms.
The FlatOut series is a demolition derby-style racing video game franchise developed by the Finnish company Bugbear Entertainment. The first game in the series, FlatOut, was released in 2004 for Microsoft Windows. It focused on high-speed racing featuring loud, destructive racing using loads of boost. Players could remove components from their vehicle to shed weight and gain speed at the expense of durability.
The game was praised for its demolition derby-style vehicular combat and physics engine that simulated realistic damage. The series went on to expand to video game consoles with FlatOut 2 in 2006, which introduced stunt mode featuring rag doll physics. Later sequels included FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage in 2007 and FlatOut 3: Chaos & Destruction in 2012. There were also multiple spinoffs like FlatOut: Head On. The games featured destructive tracks set in environments like construction sites, junkyards, and racing circuits.
The FlatOut franchise sold over 1 million copies worldwide. While it has not seen a new entry since 2012, the over-the-top vehicular destruction racing left its mark on the racing game genre and still retains a cult following amongst fans.
