What is Gigablast?
Gigablast is an open-source search engine software that was created with a focus on performance, efficiency, and flexibility. It was originally developed by Matt Wells and first released in 2004.
Some key features and characteristics of Gigablast include:
- Very fast crawling and indexing of websites due to efficient system architecture
- Lower resource usage compared to other search engines
- Advanced searching and filtering capabilities
- Customizable ranking algorithms
- Scalable to very large websites and high traffic
- Developer-friendly open API for extending functionality
- Available to download and run on own servers
Gigablast is implemented in C++ and works on Linux operating systems. It focuses on speed, using little disk space and memory while crawling billion-page websites in a highly parallel fashion. Custom plugins can be developed to extend functionality. The open-source code is available on GitHub.
While not as full-featured as enterprise search engines, Gigablast provides an efficient, customizable alternative well-suited for niche websites or applications needing fast, focused search capabilities.
Google Search, DuckDuckGo, Searx, YOU.com, Kagi Search, Startpage, Qwant, SearXNG, YaCy, Openverse, Brave Search, Ecosia, Wiby, Sphider, Surf Canyon, Foofind, FAROO are some alternatives to Gigablast.
