What is Gigamon?

Gigamon is a network visibility and analytics company founded in 2004 and headquartered in Santa Clara, California. Their flagship product is the GigaSECURE Security Delivery Platform, which is designed to give enterprises better visibility into their networks in order to monitor performance, detect threats, and ensure compliance.

The GigaSECURE platform works by physically tapping into the traffic flowing across an enterprise network using network TAPs or SPAN ports on switches. This traffic is then aggregated together and sent to the GigaSECURE nodes. These nodes have a variety of capabilities for processing the traffic:

• Traffic can be filtered to only send specific types of traffic to downstream tools, improving efficiency.
• Traffic can be transformed by stripping headers, masking sensitive data, or encapsulating in tunnels.
• Metadata can be generated to give enhanced context about flows.
• Copies of traffic can be sent to multiple connected monitoring tools.

By acting as a central aggregation point, the GigaSECURE platform eliminates tool overload and blindness for downstream analytics platforms. Connected tools can include application performance monitoring, intrusion detection, forensics solutions, and more. Common use cases include threat detection, incident response, and compliance auditing. Gigamon also offers several types of network packet brokers and bypass switches that integrate with GigaSECURE.
