What is Google Cloud Platform?

What Is Google Cloud Platform?

Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is Google's suite of cloud computing services, competing with AWS and Azure. It provides compute, storage, networking, machine learning, data analytics, and developer tools running on the same infrastructure that powers Google Search, YouTube, and Gmail.

Key Features

Core services include Compute Engine (VMs), Google Kubernetes Engine (managed Kubernetes), Cloud Run (serverless containers), Cloud Functions (serverless functions), Cloud Storage, BigQuery (serverless data warehouse), and Vertex AI (machine learning platform).

GCP is particularly strong in data analytics (BigQuery), Kubernetes (GKE was the first managed Kubernetes service), and machine learning. Its global network provides low-latency connectivity between regions.

Pricing

GCP offers a 300 dollar free credit for new accounts and an always-free tier for many services. Pricing is competitive with AWS, with sustained use discounts applied automatically (no commitment required) and committed use discounts for longer terms.

GCP vs AWS

AWS has the largest market share and broadest service catalog. GCP excels in data analytics, Kubernetes, and machine learning. GCP's pricing model with automatic sustained use discounts is simpler than AWS's reserved instance system.
